SYDNEY LAWYER'S DEATH NIGHT OF THE TRAGEDY SON'S EVIDENCE AT INQUEST By Telegraph—Press Associotion—Copyright (Received August 31. 9.5 p.m.) SYDNEY, Aug. 31 Considerable interest was shown to-day in the coroner's inquiry into the murderous attack upon Mr. Victor Saywell and his wife on April 22, which resulted in the death of the former and the probable permanent disablement of his wife, who cannot speak and was not able to attend the inquest. Deceased's son, Jack Saywell, was (lis* chief witness. He stated in evidence that he was in the company of a young woman on the night before the tragedy was discovered, pre arrived home at 2.15 a.m. but was not aware that his parents had been attacked and were so near death. A maid discovered the crime when sho visited their bedroom at the breakfast hour.
Witness said his father had objected to his keeping company with a Roman Catholic girl, but nothing more thaji tho usual squabbles had occurred. His parents also had objected to him staying out lato at. night. The inquest was adjourned at this stage. Mr. Saywell, of Bellvue Hill, Sydney, was a well-known solicitor and sportsman. Ho and his wife were found in bed on the morning of April 22 with their heads terribly injured. Apparently they had been struck with a hammer while they were asleep. Ihe injured couple were taken to hospital. Each was in a critical condition. Mr. Saywell expired the next night. A blood-stained hammer was found in an adjoining paddock.
