OUTBREAK OF TYPHOID
CASES AMONG MAORIS STRICT PRECAUTIONS TAKEN [BY telegraph—OWN correspondent] DARGAYILLE, Wednesday Strict precautions have been laifeen by Dr. Duncan Cook, medical officer of health for North Auckland, against an extension of tha recent outbreak of typhoid fever among in tho settlement at Karakanui, on the Kaipara Harbour. An additional case has been brought to the isolation ward at the Northern Wairoa Hospital at Te Kopuru, and several suspects are still under observation. The whole Maori population ait Karakanui has now been inoculated. The outbreak is attributed to a contact} which took pfcHJl three weeks ago, and, owing to the isolated position of tha settlement, it was impossible to check the outbreak before it spread to its present proportions. [With the inoculation of all possible contacts, tha danger of the complaint now spreading is remote. Dr. Cook la. quita confident that the spread of the diseasa hag been effectively checked. A close watch will be kept during the next few weeks, not only at Karakanui, but ia other Maori settlements. Meanwhile, tha situation is well in hand.
