SOCIAL WORK FOR GIRLS
SALEM! HOUSE ACTIVITIES GREATER NEEDS OF TO-DAY A statement, that at no previous period had there been a greater need for such an Institution as Salem House. Cook Street, was made by Mr/ W. R. Wilson, chairman of the executive committee of the Door of Hope Association, al the annual meeting vest erdav. The chairman said the spirit of the teze tended toward greater freedom in home life, bringing difficulties ox parental control. The. committee, however, once again had satisfaction in reporting on the good work accomplished in the home. It was gratifying to know that the results of the work were so largely permanent, and the percentage of failures was comparatively small. Citizens who supported the work on behalf of the ffirls cared for could have satisfaction that their money conld not be better spent. The services of the matron of the home, Mrs. John Graham, were praised in the report, it being stated that, with the assistance of a capable staff, she was largely responsible for the fine result:! achieved. Mrs. Graham also took an active part in the interest of girls outside the home. Assistance by service, apart from gifts of money and supplies; had been given by friends of the institution," and Dr. Woodward Horslev,//the honorary medical officer, had also given valuable service. /The financial statement showed an cess of expenditure over income of £316, after providing for depreciation to the amount of £167. A £SO legacy was received from the estate of the late Mr. 51. Crawford.
Ihe report and balance-sheet were adopted, the retiring members of the committee. Miss A. Baker and Mr. W. RWiison, being re-elected. Instances of the successful results of tiie activities were given by the matron, and the Rev. Frazer Barton, of St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Herns Baiy, gave an address on the inspiration from Christian teachings in carrying on the work. /'
