HIGHER CUSTOMS YIELD

INCREASE AT AUCKLAND GREATEST FOR 22 MONTHS MOTOR REVENUE: IMPROVES Customs revenue of £189,052 collected at Auckland last month was the greatest for any month since October, 1930, when receipts totalled £206,183. The August receipts, which more than maintained the increase which has been a feature of the monthly returns since the beginning of the year, brought the total for tho first eight months of the year to £1,302,945, which is £344,859 greater than the total of £958,086 for the corresponding eight months last- year. Last month's receipts; of £189,052 were £70,071 greater than the receipts for August, 1931, which totalled £118.981. They were £33,832 greater than the receipts for July, 1932, which totalled £155,220. Although the August receipts from petrol and tyre duties showed an increase of £4843, being £37,3C4 compared with £32,461 in August, 1931, and although they were higher than the July receipts by £5429, tho total for the year to date is still well below that of the corresponding period of 1931. The eight months' revenue from petrol and tyre taxes was £315,903, compared wil.h £354,929 to tho end of August, 1931, a decreaso of £39,026. Revenue from Three Sources Last month's revenuo from petrol was £35,942, compared with £30,349 in August, 1931, and from tyre duty, £1362, compared with £2112. The additional duty on motor spirit collected since the supplementary Budget of October goes to swell the Consolidated Fund and is included in the return of customs duties, the duty on motor spirit being deemed to be at the old rale of 6d a gallon for purposes of comparison. The total revenue collected at Auckland from the three sources, customs, petrol and tyre duties, during the eight month period was £1,618,848, compared with £1,313,015 in the . corresponding period last year, an increase of £30.5,833.
