SEAMEN'S WAGES
EXPIRY OF AGREEMENT I »■ UNION DELIBERATING NO NEW TERMS ANNOUNCED The agreement between the New Zealand Shipowners' Federation and the Seamen's Union expired yesterday, but it has not been replaced by a new arrangement. The matter is now being discussed by the union, which has received a proposed agreement from the shipowners. In this a number of alterations in the present conditions are suggested, including a 20 per cent reduction in wages. So far the shipowners have not received a reply to the proposals.
Prior to 1926 the men's conditions of work were fixed by an Arbitration Court award, but since that year agreements have been made between the shipowners and the union, anfl as each one expired it was revised and renewed. The present agreement has been in force sines September 1, 1930, and under its terms it was to operate until August 31, 1932, and thereafter until a new agreement was entered into. The conditions nnder which the men have been working ire not governed by an Arbitration Court award and consequently they were not subject to the 10 per cent wages cut which was applied to other workers.
