STRUGGLE FOR POWER

NAZIS IN GERMANY

HITLER'S LATEST DEMAND

POWERS LIKE MUSSOLINI DR. LUTHER IN DISFAVOUR By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received August 10. 5.5 p.m.) BERLIN, Aug. 15 The fact that the leader of the Nazis, Herr Hitler, demanded from the President, Marshal von Hindenburg, " the same position as Signor Mussolini received after the Fascists' march on PiOme," is now revealed in an authoritative statement disclosing the inevitability of the President's rejection of the Nazi demands.

Official sources dwell on the fact that Herr. Hitler gave a solemn assurance in the presence of witnesses that the Nazis would support a National Government enjoying President Hindenburg's confidence. Consequently the Hindenburg Government repudiates the responsibility for the collapse of the Hitjer negotiations. The Government has intimated that the Reichstag certainly will meet on August 30 when, whether or not by coincidence, the " Steel Helmets," the exSoldiers' League, the most efficient and least extreme of semi-military organisations closely associated with the present governing group, will assemble 150,000 strong for its annual rally in Berlin.

In the meanwhile outrages have ceased. Herr Hitler has given his " storm troops " a week's leave. This is interpreted cither as a gesture to support the denial that he planned a march on Berlin, or the belief that he is disappointed and that his restivo units will be better dispersed. JS'azi journals declare that there is nothing to stop the Hitlerites' onward march, adding that bayonets may be useful, but the Government cannot sit on them permanently. The Vossische Zeitung, commenting on Herr Hitler's demand for powers similar to those of Signor Mussolini, says the world has long suspected that this was hia aim. His " storm troops " would bo transformed into militia on the Fascist model and the army would step into the background. Moreover Parliament would be abolished.

The paper says the week's leave given to the " storm troops " is believed merely to he a cover for their secret mobilisation for Herr Hitler's next move. The Government's attempt to deal with unemployment lias been hampered by Dr. Hans Luther, president of the Reichsbank. Dr. Luther has expressed his unwillingness to provide adequate credits. He may be removed from office by Presidential decree. TREATMENT OF JEWS PROTEST TO THE WORLD HITLERISM DENOUNCED (Keceived August ]<>, 9.55 p.m.) GENEVA. Aug. 15 " llillcrism will become a challenge and an offence against all Jewry unless it be speedily curbed. The Jewish forces must unite for self-defence," said Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, chairman of the American Jewish Congress, speaking at the Jewish World Conference. " The Nazis are spreading anti-Semitism in many countries," said Dr. Tenenbaum. He recalled the fact that Jews supplied more than 17 per cent of. the German army in the Great War, and said 12 per cent were buried on the battlefields. Other speakers declared that the Jews in Germany Svere down and out. Their chances of recovery had been lessened by the tendency to oust Jews from economic life, combined with the poisoning of the minds of youth against them. A Polish speaker said the reason so few Jews were attending the conference was that they had become cowaids. " We have come here to launch a protest to all the world," he said, " against the present treatment of Jews in Germany." Dr. Motzik expressed the opinion that Palestine holds the future for the Jewish race. When 1,000,000 Jews were there their enemies would speak and act differently. ACTS OF TERRORISM NAZIS' RESPONSIBILITY COMBINED DEFENCE STEPS LONDON. Aug. 9 One effect of the continued terrorism in Germany, which has opened everybody's eyes to the true character of the Nazis, is the rapid advance of working-class unity everywhere, reports the Berlin correspondent (if the Manchester Guardian. Socialists and Communists are forming joint defence organisations. The leaders of the Socialist Party yesterday informed Herr Draclit that tlioy would authorise their followers to take immediate measures of self-defence if the Nazi outrages did not cease.

Tlie Government lias appealed to Herr Hitler to exercise a restraining influence. Even tlio police now admit that tlie Konigsberg outrages were committed by Nazis.

The Government apparently has begun to realise that to condone terrorist violence is not a simple matter in a country with a highly developed civilisation, and a great Labour movement with political and revolutionary experience at least »» great as von Papcn's and von Schleicher's.
