CRICKET CLUBS IN HOLLAND BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS WORLD'S JAVELIN RECORD There are about one hundred cricket clubs in active service in Holland, where tlie game has been played for more than 120 years.

Ma'tli Jarvonin. the Finnish athlete who broke the world's javelin-throwing record, with a throw of 238 ft. 7in., when

ho won this event at the QJympic Games, was reported to have thrown the javelin 242 ft. lOin. in a meeting at Abo, Finland, a few weeks ago.

The New Zealand badminton championships are to be played in tho Central Wharf sheds, commencing on August 26. Eighteen graded events are on tho programme, so that players of all standards will be catered for, and the provision of six courts should do away with the waiting about that was unavoidable when only two courts were available.

The Auckland secondary schools' Rugby championship competition was instituted in 1896. Since then Auckland Grammar has won the championship 23 times. King's College, formerly St. John's Collegiate School, seven times. Mount Albert Grammar twice, and Sacred Heart College once. On three occasions Auckland and King's have tied, while this year Auckland and Mount Albert finished level.

Auckland swimming lost ono of its keenest supporters through the death recently of Mr. J. H. Davidson. For a number of years Mr. Davidson, who was a member of tlie Parnell Club, was his club's delegate to the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, and on his resignation two years ago be was a life-member of the centre. On several occasions, Mr. Davidson accompanied representative teams as masseur.

A hockey match for the Rankin Cup. the championship trophy among secondary schools of New Zealand, has been arranged to take place at Te Awamutu on August 24 between tho Auckland Grammar School, holders of the cup, and the To Awamutu High School. No matches for this trophy have been played since 1928 when Auckland defeated the Hamilton High School by six goals to one. Auckland Grammar School won the trophy the previous year from Canterbury.

Although (lie Sacred Heart College fifteen finished in lowest position in the secondary schools' senior grade Rugby football competition, the team must, be given credit for consistently good exhibitions. Except for losing a game against Auckland Grammar by 27 points to 3, Sacred Heart was not beaten by a margin of more than eight, points in any of its other games. The team scored one championship point, obtaining this from a draw, 3—all, with Auckland Grammar in the first round.

V.. W. C. Jupp lias surpassed W. G. Grace's record, for ail amateur, of scoring 1000 runs and taking 100 wickets in a season eight times. Jupp's feat of doing it nine times lias been beaten by only two professionals, Wilfred Rhodes (16 times) and G. IT. Hirst (14 times), and equalled by only one, W. E. Astill. When "he first played for Sussex, before the war, Jupp was a professional, but he had become an amateur again before ho left that county. For the past ten years he hns been with Northamptonshire. In all the nine seasons in which he got the " cricketer's double" he has ranked as an amateur.
