Steps havo been taken by the Auckland master bakers' to initiate an industrial dispute to come before a conciliation council at ail early date. Tho present award, ■which was made for a term of 12 months, came into operation on January 11 of this year.

The minimum "rates of wages sought by the employers are as follows, the existing rates being given in parentheses:—Foreman baker or pastrycook, £4 10s (£5 l6s)journeyman baker or pastrycook, £4 (£5); bakehouse labourer, £3 5s (£4 Os 6d). In tho junior labour section, classes have been added for employees 16 and under 17 years of age at £l, and 17 and under 18 at £1 ss. For those, 18 and under 19 the proposed rate is £1 10s (£2 2s 6d), with £1 15s (£2 10s) and £2 5s (£3)\ for . succeeding years. . * For female employees the proposed ratosi are 15s' for tho first year, £1 for the second, £1 5s for the third, and £llos for the fourth, and thereafter. The existing rates begin at £1 2s 6d for tho first six and proceed by 5s increases each, six >■ months to £1 - 17s 6d • for -the fourth six months, and thereafter £2 ss. Ifc is further proposed that where journeywomen have been paid three-quarters of the wages of journeymen they should now be paid two-thirds of that rate. •. Another important alteration-proposed is the weekly hours of work should be inci'eased from 46 to 48. In the past, for employees starting before 4 a.m., a special allowance of 5s per shift has been provided, but it is proposed now to do away W it h this 'and fix the ordinary time of Kia 'tinc as not earlier than 3, a.m. ■ -s . -It is also proposed to delete from the holiday clause the annual picnic day and the eight working days winch have hitherto been allowed as holiday annually.
