DUAL-PURPOSE PIGS
* * INFLUENCE OF FEEDING
There seems to be doubt in the minds of some farmers as to how one breed or cross of pig can bo equally suitable for pork and bacon, writes Theo. A'. Stephens in the Farmer and Stockbreeder. These people, however, appear to overlook the fact that, while one pic can, and does, answer both purposes, their character is somewhat by feeding. Some pigs have the ability oi laving on fat in their early days, and if they are fed with a ration containing a fairly wide balance as between protein and carbohydrates, they will make good' finished porkers. On the other hand, if tho fiatnci pigs are fed on a growing food, i.e., n ration with a greater proportion of proteins, they will grow rather than put on fat, and will go on to the finishing for bacon equally well. A pig that will meet the dual need of pork or bacon is no illusion and is the typo that pays host to breed. It is tho feeding which nocds variation when we decide what wo want to do with them.
