PLOUGHING MATCHES
EVENTS IN SOUTHLAND
Although it is reported that ploughing matches which were once popular in all parts of the Dominion have gradually dropped out of existence in all other provinces, there still remain two matches in Southland which continue to enjoy a fair measure of popularity, writes the correspondent of the Auckland Weekly News. This year there were large attendances and increased entries at both matches, which were held within a few days of each other, and a revival of interest was apparent in the art of tho ploughman who, in these days of top-dressing and grassland management, has become less essential to successful farming. The Drummond and Southland champion matches have survived all other matches in the Dominion. It is stated that the discontinuance of the first mentioned was advocated by several supporters at the last annual meeting, but the success of this year's match will probably ensuro at least a 'further match. 'The Drummond match was held first, details of which have already been given. At the champion match, held at Makarewa. conditions were again favourable and the ploughing of a very high standard. Ono of the features of the match was that George Gray succeeded in winning the " double " by again securing the championship. This was a meritorious performance, as he has been consistently high on the prize list for tho champion match for several years and his success was very popular.
