In a time when building activities and commercial extensions have been greatly restricted, the new departure in business by the company is an encouraging sign of confidence in the future of trade in Auckland. The store" which have now appeared in Queen Street are a practical instance ° f th Cou"d C tSdero fi f d thrhistoric Old Mill in this particular portion of Queen Street awaken to-day, he would assuredly be astounded at the transformation which has taken place m the structure. First Mr. H M. Smeeton, and then Messrs. Winstone, Limited, m conjunction with the Farmers' Trading Company, assisted by Mr. L. V. Moses as architect, have been concerned in transforming one of the oldest commercial buildings in the city into an impressively dignified exterior. What is more, the interior, with its appointments, represents the most up-to-date of styles. f On his recent journey overseas the general manager of the 1-armers Trading Company made a thorough study of the latest developments in merchandising in Great Britain, the Continent and the United States. Visitors from overseas will no doubt recognise that the workmanship and the design of the new Queen Street premises compare favourably with the commercial premises of other countries. In the eyes of Auckland the altered building will be an impressive and valuable addition to the number or Queen Street's fine shops. . , . , The work has undoubtedly been of value to the community and it has been important to building and allied trades. The advantages of making a forward and confident move in a time of economic depression are apparent. The development of the Farmers' Trading Company's Queen Street premises has involved an expenditure on alterations, lighting, fittings and fixtures of about £IO,OOO. The greater part of this amount has been expended in wages paid to members of the trades concerned in the work. The opening of the branch in the heart of the city has also enabled the Eprmers' Trading Company to provide permanent employment for more than 100 young men and women at a time when unemployment is causing the greatest distress in New Zealand. The company is entirely an Auckland concern, using its capital and retaining its profits in the Auckland Province. • In its Hobson Street warehouse, its five factories and its 59 branches it employs more than 1100 Auckland citizens. Last year the company sold above £850,000 worth of New Zealand-made goods. In the case of merchandise which necessarily must be imported, it is the policy of the company to give preference to articles made within the British Empire. Of the last twelve months' imports 83 per cent, or more than four-fifths, was British./ The company is extending an invitation to inspect the new Queen Street premises to all citizens, especially on the event of the opening day. Evidences of the extent to which other firms have been concerned in the enterprise are abundant. The alterations and the shop fittings were' carried out by Messrs. J. T. Julian and Son, Limited, the plumbing work by Messrs. W. A. Chenery, Limited, and ths electric light fittings by Messrs. A. and T. Burt, Limited. The marble front has been the workmanship of Messrs. Parkinsons, terrazzo marble being provided by the New Zealand Marble Company. Outside signs have been erected by Claude Neon Lights, and other signs are the work of Messrs. Johnson, Limited. W. and T. Avery scales and a Waygood-Otis lift have been provided. Messrs. J. C. Crawford and Company have supplied the and the " Servel " display cabinet for perishable foods has been installed by Refrigerators, Limited, in conjunction with Bond and Bond, Limited. The Latest and Most Up-to-D ate Electric » Lighting System—haa been installed in the Farmers' modern Queen Street premises by Messrs. A. & T. Burt Ltd. In addition to the standard electrical installation, an emergency battery lighting set has also been installed, and the whole equipment is automatic, which eliminates any risk of total darkness. On entering this fine building one cannot but notice the brilliant lighting effect. Crompton Pearl Lamps have been used exclusively, and for efficiency and long life these lamps are unsurpassed.
