REAR LIGHTS ON BICYCLES

Sir, —I am afraid. I do not entirely agree with . some of- your correspondents re the above. In my opinion the motorist is trying his very Lest to clear the roads of cyclists. He thinks because he. pays petrol and tyre taxes he .owns the road, but the cyclists are not going to let, him have it all his own way, although there are a very few courteous motorists on the roads. I quite agree that cyclists strung out across the road are a danger to the whole community, but so are the "road-hogs" who go flying past without even blowing the horn, and giving the cyclists barely enough road to ride on. I think that a good reflector placed in the right position serves the purpose for which it is intended very well. How many cyclists will be able to afford to buy a lamp and a tail-light connection? It would need to be an electric outfit, and the cost of such an outfit is far. too high for the average cyclist to pay. The reason I say an electric light is that an oil or gas light will go out as soon as you strike a rough road. If a cyclist lias to carry a tail-light then why not a pedestrian? One motorist said that if the headlamps of a car are not properly focussed they throw-a dark spot on the road, and if a cyclist gets in this spot he can not be seen by the motorist concerned. Well, in that case, it is t}ie motorist who is to blame, and not the cyclist. I think that if all such motorists went along to the A.A.A. they would fix their lamps for them and therefore relieve them of .the trouble that the cyclists are causing them. In conclusion I would like to say that if the "road-hogs" learned a few road manners they would experience little or 110 difficulty with the cyclist, and I know that tho cyclists are not going to be put off the road without a fight for their rights.
