NEWMARKET DISCUSSION DECISION TO ACCEPT LOWEST The question whether a local body should accept the lowest figure when open tenders are called, or whether a firm in iU district should receive preference, was discussed at last evening's mooting of tho Newmarket Borough Council, when tenders for the supply of brush box hardwood for the redecking of tho railway overbridgo at the Parnell end of Broadway wero considered. It was decided lo accept tho lowest, that of the Pike Hardwood Company, of 37s a 100 ft. . The Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, moved that tho only tender by a firm in the borough, that of C. and A. Odlin, Limited, at 37s 6d. bo accepted, tho motion being seconded by Mr. R. Philpot. However, an amendment by Mr. F. Appleton that tho lowest be accepted was carried by 7 votes to 2. Fivo tenders were received, tho highest being 38s 9d.
