NEW HELM ORDERS
CHANCE TO DIRECT SYSTEM [FROM OUB OWN correspondent} LONDON. June 17 A meeting attended by representatives of all the shipping interests and associations has been hold at the Board of Trade to discuss what steps could be agreed upon as likely to facilitate the change from the system of indirect to direct helm orders. Tt was agreed to bo desirablo that the words "port" and "starboard," used iD the direct sense, should bo employed as the permanent form of helm or steering orders under the new system. It was also agreed that it would bo nscful, 'in order to call the attention of officers and men to the fact that orders were being given under the new system, that from the date on which the direct system becomes compulsory, there should be a short transitional period during which some particular warning word should be used in addition to the word of the order, and after some discussion it was agreed tli.it the warning word should The orders during the transitional period would then be "wheel to starboard," "wheel to port," or "starboard the wheel," "port the wheel."
