The Knitting Craze

When wool week came, and all of Auckland s leading draper #10169 Were advertising wool, the weather kept mo well indoors. Every time I glanced outside,, or dared my face to show, (| Rain seemed to say, " Stay in to-day, it's wool week, don t you know. So I decided that I'd have to spend my winter days As one of the enthusiasts who'd got the knitting craze. I wrote an then and there, for wool to make a pair Of socks for dad, as home-made socks are wonderful for weary Wool week went, my wool arrived, and with it came the sun. The wool was put away until the outdoor work was done. However, one wet day I cast my stitches on to jreap The feeling of self-righteousness re farmers and their sheep. By working in the evenings with odd wet days interspersed. My sock progressed in fine i»tyle and my dreams kept pace But I do confess that when the time arrived to " turn tna heel, Sad misgivings and apprehension# 1 began to feel. Just when I'd'decided 1 must aid, A friend called in and gently said, " It's too large, I m afraid. Alas! Alack! 'Twas all too truel When I looked hard 1 saw That the leg to fit that sock would have a foot size twelve or more! Woe betide the people who don't look before they leap. I almost felt like saying, " Drat the farmers and their sheep l" But "An ill wind blows nobody any good " ia true, I see. For my little brother did so enjoy unravelling for me! Glum depression murmured, " All your efforts are in vain," But I have cast my stitches with a hopeful " Try again.
