DECLINE IN BETTING
TOTALISATOR RETURNS FIGURES FOR THE PROVINCE HEAVY DECREASE RECORDED FALL IN PAST THREE YEARS "With the opening of the new season this month, both for racing and trotting, clubs throughout New Zealand are hoping for greater revenue from totalisator returns to enable them to continue their operations. During the past 1931-32 season there has been a decline in the volume of betting, the tendency, which was noted the previous seasons, being maintained. During the season just ended the sum invested in the Auckland Province was £1,173.855, compared with £1.809,420 10s for the same meetings the previous season, the decline being £635.565 10s. Compared with the 1929-30 season the investments show a decrease of £1.064,482 10s, or nearly 50 per cent. Racing, as distinct from trotting, was responsible for by far the greater part of the season's betting, the total investments with city and country racing clubs in 1931-32 being £892,150, of which amount city clubs were responsible for £591,926 15s. The decline recorded in racing was £507,897, compared with the previous season, investments with city clubs declining by £358.816 ss. Country clubs showed a decline of £149.080 15s. The falling-off in the total investments at trotting " club meetings, which totalled £281,705, was £127,667 10s, compared with a fall of £91,597 in the previous season. Details of Investments At the four meetings conducted by the 'Auckland Racing Club at Ellerslie, betting totalled £426,169, while the amounts handled by the totalisator tho previous reason amounted to £601,355 10s, the fall in betting this season being £175,186 10s. The decrease the previous season was £199,566, and that in 1929-30, £181,679. compared with the 1928-29 season. The Dargaville meeting, which shows a great increase las, 6eason, was held at the Avondale course, ■while the Waipapakauri meeting, _^' hlcn is included in the figures for 1929-30 has not been held for tho past two seasons. No meeting was held at Opotiki this yeai, and the Franklin Club held only a oneday meeting, compared with two days last season. _ Among the country trotting clubs, the Waikato organisation's meeting comprised a total of 14 races, as against 16 in 1930-31, while there were only seven • races at Cambridge instead of eifiht. No meeting was held at Whangarei by the Northland Club this year.
