OBITUARY

SIR ALAN JOHNSTONE British Wirolesa ItUGBY, Aug. 3 Sir Alan Johnstone, for 58 years a member of the British diplomatic service and a noted sportsman, died in London on July 31, aftor an operation, aged 73. He leaves a widow and an only son, Mr. Harcourt Johnstone, member of the House of Commons for South Shields and assistant Whip to tho National Government. Sir Alan Johnstone was tho fourth son of the first Baron Derwont. Ho entered the diplomatic service in 1879 and served at Vienna, Washington, Belgrade, the Hague and Ronw. He was secretary of the Legation at Copenhagen, 1895; secretary of the Embassy, 1901; acting Charge d'Affaires, 1896-99, secretary of tho Embassy at Vienna, 1903; British Minister to Denmark, 1905-10; and at the Hague, 1910-17.
