BRITISH TEXTILES

MR. BENNETT'S REMARKS DISCUSSION AROUSED "• (Received August 4. 5.5 p.m.) OTTAWA. Aug. 3 The remarks of the Prime Minister, Mr. R. B. Bennett, yesterday about textiles have aroused very keen discussion. Local interests are wondering whether he meant to convey that he would extend preferences to British cotton, seeing that Canadian cotton mills are described as an efficient industry. A Minister intimately associated with Mr. Bennett to-day volunteered an alternative interpretation. He said new preferences would not be allowed to ruin efficient Canadian industries. The manufacture of cotton in Cauada was highly specialised and many Canadian processes were thoroughly organised. He understood these would not be affected, but that did not mean that certain linos of British cottons would not receive better treatment. Mr. Bennett intended to indicate that where Canadian industries were inefficient they would not be permitted to totter along under the shelter of protection, said the Minister.
