OF. £2OO FROM SAFE £BO IN SILVER NOT TOUCHED WANGANUI BURGLAR'S RAID [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] ■WANGANUI, Thursday .Although the exact total has not been disclosed, it is believed that a burglar who carried out a raid at the Imperial Hotel decamped with £2OO, most of which was in bank notes. The "proprietor of the hotel, Mr. T. Hurley, and the police are reticent, but they agree that the affair could have been more serious, as during the week-end there was an amount running into four figures in the safe, but this sum was banked prior to the thief's visit. It is also stated that one night last week tbcro was £2OOO in the safe. The burglary was carried out during the early hours of Tuesday, the intruder apparently making use of a vacant room next to that of the proprietor. Ho stole a key from Mr. Hurley's room and while the night porter was in another part of the building, opened the safe and took tho cashbox to tho room in which he had bidden. After taking the bank notes and two cheques he escaped, although between £BO and £9O in silver was not disturbed. THIEF IN BUTCHER'S SHOP MUTTON AND HAM TAKEN The shop of R. and W. Hellaby, Limited, Panmure. was entered by a thief on Wednesday evening. The gauze in the front door was cut and the intruder stole a leg of mutton and slbs. of ham.
