FARMERS' MOTOR VEHICLES

HEAVY TRAFFIC FEES OBJECTION TO EXEMPTION [by telegraph—ows correspondent] ROTO RITA. Thursday The Rotorua Borough Council has decided to advise the Commissioner of Transport that the council is not favourable to the proposal that motor-vehicles owned by farmers should be exempted from the payment of heavy traffic fees. The Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, said that while sympathetic with primary producers, he considered that there was not a sound case for the exemption of these vehicles. Mr. A. Smith considered that all the taxes should be merged into one, a petrol tax. Owners of motor-vehicles would then pay on a mileage basis and it would be a better plan than exempting the farmer. The proposal was not a new one, but it was meeting with success where it was in operation.
