amendments advocated encouraging employment [bt telegraph—press association] NEW PLYMOUTH, "Wednesday The necessity for the alteration of the Apprentices Act, altering conditions and wages so as to make it possible for employers to employ the full number of apprentices in their respective trades, was urged at a meeting to-day of representatives of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce, Farmers' Union and Rotary Club. The chairman of the chamber, Mr. A. F Sandford, suggested that the Government should take the responsibility of paying boys five shillings a week for the first 12 or 18 months of the apprenticeship, so that employers could be induced to engage apprentices without delay.
