RATANA CANDIDATE WINS MAJORITY OF 241 VOTES GOVERNMENT NOMINEE SECOND [BY TELEGRAPH —PEESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHT : RCH, "Wednesday By a majority of 241 votes, Mr. Eruer» Tihema Tirikatene, independent Ratana candidate, was returned as member for the Southern Maori electorate at the byelection to-day, necessitated by the death of Mr. T. Makitanara, the former Government member. Mr. William Te Ihoki Parata, the official Coalition candidate, filled second place. Officially there were six candidates, but a few days ago one, Mr. Wiremu Mihaka, announced his retirement. However, onc« a candidate is nominated he must go to the poll.
