SOUTHERN MAORI SEAT
RATANA CANDIDATE WINS MAJORITY OF 241 VOTES GOVERNMENT NOMINEE SECOND [BY TELEGRAPH —PEESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHT : RCH, "Wednesday By a majority of 241 votes, Mr. Eruer» Tihema Tirikatene, independent Ratana candidate, was returned as member for the Southern Maori electorate at the byelection to-day, necessitated by the death of Mr. T. Makitanara, the former Government member. Mr. William Te Ihoki Parata, the official Coalition candidate, filled second place. Officially there were six candidates, but a few days ago one, Mr. Wiremu Mihaka, announced his retirement. However, onc« a candidate is nominated he must go to the poll. Details of the voting are:— Eruera Tihema Tirikatene (Independent Ratana) 425 William Te Ihoka Parata (Official Coalition) 184 Peter Macdonald (Independent) ... 131 Joseph Beaton (Independent Coalitionist) 113 Tame Kaiporohu Bragg (Independent Reform) 94 Wiremu Mihaka (Independent Coalitionist) • 3 Majority for Tirikatene 241 The total number of votes was 950. . The Southern Maori electorate include! the whole of the South Island and Stewart Island. f
