AMATEUR ATHLETICS

STADIUM AT PAPATOETOE OPENING ON LABOUR DAY The Papatoetoe Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club has decided to hold n.n athletic and sports carnival on Labour Day to mark the official opening of the new cycle track and athletic oval, known as the Papatoetoe Stadium. This ground was constructed by the Papatoetoe Town Board as an unemployment relief work at the suggestion of the Papatoetoe Athletic and Cycle Club, which donated X'2o from its funds toward the scheme. \ Acclaimed to be one of the finest grounds of its kind in the country, the track is elliptical in shape, 25ft. wide and banked to a height of 14ft. at the bends, and is approximately six Wis to the mile. Cyclists who have had trial spins on the track, which has still to be surfaced with sealed cinders, speak highly of it. The grass oval in the centre is 110 yds by 70yds, and suitable for athletic and field events. The president of the Papatoetoe Club. Mr. R. McLeod. reported to a meeting this week that the Auckland Centre had granted permission to hold a sports programme on Labour Day. It is proposed to hold an allday carnival, commencing about 10 a.m. with children's events, and continuing with cycling, athletic and field events. Wrestling and dancing competitions are also proposed for the programme, which will bo most comprehensive.
