NEW PARNELL SCHOOL

A REVISED ESTIMATE GRANT SOUGHT BY BOARD A decision to apply to the Education Department for a grant for a modified building to replace the Parnell School was made at a meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday. A letter from the Parnell School Committee pointed out the urgent necessity for a school on the new site and suggested a modification in the plans in order to expedite the authorisation of a grant. In a report, the architect, Mr. A. B. Miller, gave an estimate for a wooden building to be erected on the old St. Stephen's School site. He suggested the board should cancel its application for a structure in permanent materials and should seek the erection of a wooden building, similar to the new Waihi School, lie suggested there should be a main block of .pighl rooms. Application should be made for a grant and the board might contribute a certain amount from the small remaining balance of its rebuilding fund. The report stated that the present school at Parnell Jiise was erected in 1879. The building and sito were entirely unsuitable for school purposes. Jt was situated on an island of about two acres surrounded by traffic roads. There was great nuisance from smoke owing to the close proximity of the railway station and the. area was practically nj I taken up with buildings and embankments. Owing to the nature of the site it had been necessary to liavo a two-storeyed building and heavy traffic caused tho high walls to vibrate. "The revised estimate ig about. £1.1,000 below the previous one," paid the. chairman, Mr. A. Burns. "The new site is an excellent one in the heart of the district away from the factory area." The architect's report was approved.
