BILLY BOY LOSES FRIENDS AGAIN REFUSES A FENCE GOOD JUMPING BY LUCESS [TVT TELEGRAPH —OWN COTt RESPONDENT] CHRISTCTIURCH, Tuesday Tho courso proper at Riccarton to-day was open both for jumping and galloping and an interesting morning's work was witnessed by a largo number of spectators. The trestles were placed 40ft. out from the rails for galloping and tlio going provided was inclined to bo fast, in spito of recent rain and frosts. v The main fcaturo of the schocMng over the stcoplochase fences was Billy Boy's refusal again to tacklo -.the first of the kennels double. Ridden by J. Burgess, ho was sent out with Luccss (D. O'Connor) and Apacho (Cr. Dompßter). They jumped tho first two fences, the sod wall and tho post and rails well, and Luccss and Billy Boy raced abreast in front of Apache to the kennels double. It could be seen that Billy Boy's mind was made up long before reaching the fence and his rider had no chance of keeping him on. Luccss and Apache continued on their journey, both giving good displays and finishing together with attractive efforts over CuUb'. In tho meantime Billy Boy had repeated his offence a couple of timea„ but was evontually eot over tho doublo from a short run and almost from a Btand. Taken back for a longer run, hoiyever, ho refused to jump at first, but again scrambled over from a couple of strides away. Ho was not further persevered with and once more leit liis connections and Grand National admirers in a quandary. Royal Visitor Improving As matters now stand there wguld be a big risk in hoping that he may mend his ways on the day. The opportunity of using the courso proper to-morrow and on lhursday will not bo missed, in the hope that he will give some encouragement to all eon-
cerned to view liis prospects of getting round next Tuesday in a more favourable light than at present. _ .Royal Koign (G. Murhtt), Lancer (D. O'Connor), Gay Jim (G. Salt), Bon Aryan (H. Turner) and lioyal Visitor (J. Burgess), set off for a round of the country. All jumped tho first sod wall Bafoly, but Lancer ran off at the next, the post and I rails. Bon Aryan and Royal Visitor went | on together, clear of the other pair, but i Royal JJeign had joined them before reaching Cutts' and they jumped that fence practically in line, with Gay Jim a couple of | lengths back. All four gave excellent dia- j plays. ... iKoyal Visitor showed no inclination to j shirk his work as on the previous day. j while Royal Reign improved on his effort in i the recent Horaeby Steeplechase. Bon Aryan i struck the first fence, but made no mistakes j afterwards, and is evidently in better form j
than on previous visits to Kiccarton. Gay | Jim also jumped well throughout, but was i at a disadvantage in tha matter of racing | condition. Lancer failed to jump in later | attempts and will not contest the Grand ■ National Steeplechase, but may race in hack j steeplechases later at the meeting. Taramoa's Faultless Display Paris (G. Dempster) ahd Tar«mca (V. Dempster) were sent out to execute a similar task. Both went well until Paris got too close to the carriage paddock brush and got rid of his rider. The latter soon remounted and the pair negotiated Cutts' together. Tararooa gave his usual faultless display, but Paris did not please. He again ran down some of his fences and screwed badly at the last. However, he has never shone at schooling and always races better with the Co o > kopua P (A. Skipper) negotiated two rounds of the inside steeplechase ;ences at a steady pace and made light work of ttie obstacles. There is no doubt about ms jump--lUNaassock7'(H. Turner) and Jael ("W. Cameron) were companions in a task over too schooling hurdles, the latter pulling UP after jumping four in an encouraging manner, Nassock continued over two more, giving a dashing display, but again showing signs of respiratory trouble. Elude and Water Polo opened proceedings i by galloping six furlongs in 1.18. Ler.aubin, who was eired by tho trotter lit Carbine, ran a good race on a short preparation in the Greenmount Hunter* Steeplechase last year and he looks as lx , ho has been better prepared this year, uo that he fihould have bright prospects in what appears likely to bo a weak field. Tho three-year-old filly by Polazel from Fortune's Wheel is working regularly with F. Gilchrist's team at Ellerslie, but she has pot yet been required to do anything very strenuous. As her dam is a full-sister to Phar Lap. by Night Raid from Entreaty, tho filly's progress will be watched with interest when ehe commences to gallop. Like Phar Lap tho filly is a chestnut. She has not a great deal of size, but ib
neatly proportioned.
