LADIES' HOCKEY

TWO TEAMS EQUAL IN LEAD Little improvement in the standard was shown last Saturday when a further series of matches in each competition of the Auckland Ladies' Hockey Association was decided. The grounds were slill bumpy but, making allowance for this better hockey was anticipated. In the senior erade Clevedon had the bye, while Wesley beat Mount Eden B—l, and Kiwi beat Elgin 3—o. Wesley fielded a much strengthened team, due to the inclusion of Miss E. Saunders in the halves. Mount Eden was a weakened side. Miss Lowe being absent, as well as Several others. On (be whole, the game was more evenly contested than the score indicates. Selfish play' on UKpart of players in both teams was a drawback to the game. Both teams lost chances of scoring because of this, especially during the first spell. For Mount Eden Mrs. Nash played her usual heady, game, but at times lacked support and many good attempts failed. Miss Eccles also played well, this player scoring Mount Eden's only goal after a run through from near the half-wav line. The promoted junior players all showed promise. For Wesley Miss White was the out'standing player, being prominent, for good defence. Mrs. Maun, Miss Saunders and Mrs. Stacey also showed to advantage. Mrs. White, at centre-forward, was responsible for seven of the e'ght goals scored. The game between Elgin and Kiwi was much more oven. Kiwi pressed right from the opening bully and was the more, aggressive fhrougtiout. Only the good work done by the. fullbacks and goalkeeper of the. Elgin team kept the score so low. The Baisher sisters were missing .from the Kiwi team, but Kiwi fielded a full B : de and showed good combination under the circumstances. Misses Isaacs, Francis and Waters were the outstanding players. Kiwi and Clevedon are now the joint leaders, with Wesley two points behind. The match next Saturday between Kiwi and Wesley will therefore be a very important game at this Btage of the'championship.
