SETTLING PUMICE LANDS
FARMS ON NGAKURU BLOCK FOUR SECTIONS OCCUPIED [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT J ROTORUA, Tuesday Tho Government's programme for settlement of pumice lands in tho Rotorua district was advanced another stage this week when four families were placed on sections of Ngakuru No. 1 Block. It is about 2£ years sine© the development programme was commenced upon the first block of 2000 acres of scrub land at Ngakuru and it is now found that th<? pastures have been sufficiently established to warrant active dairying operations being commenced. The Government has not disposed of the farms outright. The occupiers are there upon a share-milking basis. The four families commenced work on herds of 50 cows each, which are provided by the Government, together with milking machines, separators and all farm implements. The sheds are built upon the latest modern plans with the necessary calf and pig pens. The farms range from 130 to 230 acres, but the Government has arranged that each milker shall have sufficient land to carry 50 cows and young stock. It is proposed to receive all cream at the Ngongotaha factory. In addition to the herds each settler will be provided with farm horses and a comfortable four-roomccl cottage.
