CALLER TAKES WATCHES
incident in shop AN ARREST MADE LATER [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Mondaj A man went into a shop of Watsons, Limited, jewellers, to-day, and said ho wanted to purchase three watches and a chain. He made his choice and then was shown a ring which would not fit his finger. It was suggested that a messenger should be sent to ascertain if a ring to fit could be got in another shop, but the purchaser declined the suggestion, and tendered a cheque. When the assistant said that he would see the manager about the cheque the caller calmly pocketed the jewellery, £4O worth, and walked smartly from tho shop. Tho assistant followed him to a bank, which the man entered. He paced up and down the floor inside and came out, making his way alon;} the street to another building. The assistant telephoned tho police, and in doing so lost the man. Later in the day a man who visited another shop of the firm was identified and detectives made an arrest.
