PIG-RAISING FOR PROFIT

Sir, —The time lias arrived when New Zealand mast 'organise pig-raising and bacon production on scientific lines. It ia the only hope for the dairy farmers. Our dairy companies must take the matter up at once. Ovor the last 10 years the Danish farmer has probably made as much profit out of his pigs as out of his cows. What about his New Zealand trade rival ? In Denmark three pigs aro kept to every cow. In New Zealand we keep one pig to every three cows. In one year Denmark exported 17,000,000cwt. of pig products to England. Our exports of the same article are too ridiculous to mention. 1 would suggest that a body of men get together—men of business as well as farmers, to put this vital industry on n sound foundation. What must be done is (a) decide on the right breed and type of pig required and arrange for its rapid propagation and distribution; (b) Insist that tile Government allow our co-operative dairy companies to buy pig-feed—maize, wheat or barley, in the world's cheapest market. 1 sufier the itch of impatience when I read the Heuald's market report ; fowlwheat at 6s 3d per bushol, in short supply ; then I turn to an English newspaper and read Norwich Corn Exchange: First-class milling wheat, 23s per quarter—2s 10|d per bushel. When I buy the sairi fowlwheat in short supply at 6s 3d per bushel, I find that I have an article which, if I took to an English corn chandlei to sell, he would not glance twice at such rubbish. We have some well-intentioned gentlemen seeking work for our unemployed youths. Hore is a fertile field for their efforts. J. Littlejohn. Chairman North Snore Milk Producers' Association.
