ACTIVITIES OF ORDERS AFFAIRS OF THE CONFERENCE A meeting of the Alexandra Lodge of the Protestant Alliance Friendly Society was held in the Orange Hall on Wednesday evening, when there was an unusually large attendance of members. After the lodge business had been disposed of a social,hour was enjoyed. A programme of Scottish and fancy dances was interspersed with vocal and instrumental solos, community singing, games and competitions. Tlia youthful Enterprise Temple, No. 36, 1.0.G.T.. had a good attendance at its meeting on Thursday evening, Bro. A. Chadderton, C.T., presiding. The following officers wore elected for the new term: —0.T., Bro. Irwin German; V.T., Bro. Stacey; secretary, Bro. L. Houghton; assistant secretary, Sister M. Barnes; financial secretary, Bro. R. Manning; treasurer, Sister A. Thompson; marshal, Bro. D. Young; deputy-marshal, Sister J. Pace: chaplain, Sister E. McCarthy; puard, Bro. A. Baker; sentinel, Sister M. Stewart; P.C.T., Bro. A. Chadderton. At the conclusion of the business session of the National Independent Order of Oddfellows a visit was received from the officers and members of the Fountain of Friendship Lodge. Past Grand Bro. Edwards received the visitors, after which Bro. Phillips, as the oldest member of the United Brothers' Lodge, expressed pleasure at welcoming the representatives of one of the oldest lodges in Auckland. Some enjoyable games of bowls were then played. During the supper interval Bro. P. Foster, N.G., of the visiting lodge, thanked their hosts for the splendid evening they had enjoyed. In reply Bro. Phillips said there was no doubt that the introduction of indoor bowls was again drawing the orders closer together and cementing the bonds of friendship between them. v The popularity of the social functions arranged by the Auckland Transport Club was again emphasised on Thursday, when another social and dance was held in the Peter Pan Cabaret. Interest was len£ to the occasion by the presence of the English League footballers, and Mrs. Haigh, who is a member of the party. The cabaret accommodation was taxed to the utmost and large numbers joined in the dancing. Cards were provided for the nondancers, prizes being won by Mrs. Ellis and Mr. Hill in euchre, and by Mr. and Mrs. de Malmanche in five hundred. The members of the Loyal Papatoetoe Lodge, Manchester Unity, 1.0.0. F., had a good time at their last meeting, when the officers and members of the Loyal Drury Lodge were entertained to a five hundred tournament. After a keen contest the visitors won the five hundred shield. Dancing and games followed. The music for the dancing was supplied by Miss Queen and Miss Bartlett. The Endeavour Lodge, 1.0. G.T., met in the Unity Hall lodge room on Wednesday evening, Bro. Carlaw, C.T., being in the chair. A good deal of business came up for discussion. It was decided to hold a welcome social and pound night on Wednesday in honour of the naval members on board H.M.S. Dunedin. It was notified that Temperance Sunday would be observed on September 11 by a parade at the Onehunga Methodist Church of all temperance societies. This is in commemoration of the centenary of the temperance movement to be celebrated in September. The election of officers for the new term was then proceeded with, but was not quite completed. Those elected so far are:—C.T., Bro. Moore; V.T., Sister R. Wilson; financial secretary, Sister Mrs. Cannon; treasurer, Sister E. Anderson; marshal, Sister M. Chadderton; chaplain, Sister Bennett; guard, Bro. E. Chadderton; sentinel, Bro. J. Chadderton, jun.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Dominion Lodge, Manchester Unity, 1.0.0. F., was held in the lodge hall, Carmen Avenue, off Dominion Road. The noble grand, Bro. Stubbing, presided over a fair attendance of members, and extended a welcome to the visitors present from Loyal Mount Albert, Point Chevalier, Richmond and Reinuera Lodges. The business was quickly dealt with, and during the evening Past Grand Bro. E. Taylor presented ta Past Grand Bro. N. Owen a framed past grand's emblem for service rendered during his term of office. At the close of the meeting supper was served, and danc-. ing was enjoyed, while the lodge's 500 card team played a team representing Loyal Remuera Lodge for the Cunliffe Cup. The E,emuera team was successful. Tho Auckland United Friendly Societies' Conference met on Thursday evening in the M.U. Hall, Hobson Street, Bro. W. Gregory, president, presiding. .Various phases of the activities of the conference were discussed, and letters were read from the local members of Parliament, in reference to the protest made by the societies against the Government's proposal to abolish the maternity bonus. The Prime Minister, in his reply, stated that it had now been decided not to abolish the bonus entirely, but to introduce legislation limiting the payment only to those in receipt of £2OO per year or less. A report was received from tho Dominion Council of Friendly Societies, which recently met in Wellington, and several of the matters were fully discussed. On account of the absence of the mover of the remit set down for discussion, it was decided to leave the tnatter over until the next meeting. The Loyal Ponsonby Lodge spent a very pleasant evening last week when, at the conclusion of the routine business, a "liard-up" social was held. The lodge room was well filled. The costumes worn caused much amusement, and the judge, Bro. McMillan, P.G.M., awarded the prize for the best costume to Miss Mary Duncan. The evening proved such a success that it is proposed to hold a similar ono in the near future. Tho Enterprise Lodge, No. 80, 1.0. G.T., met at Onehunga on Thursday evening, the C.T., Bro. Chadderton, presiding over a good attendance. The visitors included Bro. Moore, district deputy, and Sister Moore, of tho Endeavour Lodge. Arrangements were finalised for a number of social visits, including Mount I-'oskil!, Endeavour and Penrose. It was also agreed to assist the P.C.T. in supplying the programme at tho Rechabites social on September 6. Tho election of officers resulted as .follows:—Chiof templar, Bio. S. Ardern; V_T., Sis.
