INTRUDER IN SHOP
ATTEMPTED THEFT CHARGE PRISON TERM IMPOSED A plea of guilty was entered by John Stewart, aged 48, when charged in the Polico Court yesterday with attempting to steal 6s from a suburban shop. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said that on the evening of June 11 Mr. A. Rasmussen was seated in a room at the back of his confectionery shop in Dominion Road, Mount Eden, when ho heard the bell attached to the shop till ring. On going into the shop he found accused leaning over the counter with one of his hands on the till. Accused ran out of the shop, but was pursued and caught by Mr. ilasmussen, to whom he related a pitiablo story about his wife* and three children starving. Accused lived apart from his wife, and his children were in a homo and were certainly not starving. For some while past ho had been receiving charity by falsely stating that his family was in need, lie had previously been convicted of dishonesty. " Had ho not been convicted of thety quite recently I would have given him a chance," said the magistrate, Mr. W. R. McKean, in passing sentence of one month's imprisonment.
