WRONG NUMBER-PLATE
PICKED UP ON THE ROAD MOTORIST'S NOVEL EXCUSE A' novel excuse was advanced by a motorist, W. Gooding, when he appeared in the Police Court at Masterton last Friday charged with affixing a wrong num-ber-plate, driving an unregistered car and with having no driver's licence. It was stated that defendant picked up a numberplate on the road and affixed it to the front of his car, which had no numberplates. When he passed the Masterton borough traffic inspector the latter noticed that there was no plate on the back of the car, and he questioned the driver. The latter admitted picking up the plate and affixing it. "Why did you do that?" asked the magistrate. "I thought the owner might recognise it on the car," repied the defendant. "That's absurd," observed the magistrate, who added that driving an unregistered car on the roads to-day was a grave offenc* On the charge of affixing a wrong num-her-plate defendant was fined £2. He was fined £1 for driving an unregistered car. and 10s for having no driver's licence.
