repair work started SMALL GRANT AVAILABLE [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] "WHANG A RBI. Monday The Whangarei County Council lias received permission from the acting-Minis-ter of Public Works, the Hon. C. E. Macmillan, to proceed with repair work on the road in the Waipn Gorge. Mr. Luke Webb, chairman of the council, who interviewed the Minister in Wellington on Saturday, informed him that, unless the road was attended to immediately, it would very shortly become impassable to traffic. After the interview Mr. Webb telegraphed to the county clerk as follows: — " The Minister agrees to tho expenditure of £125 on the basis of £75 from the Government and £SO from the riding until the return of the Minister of Public Works, the Pt. Hon. J. G. Coates." The Minister's offer has been accepted, and the work was put in hand to-day. Upon his return front Ottawa, Mr. Coates will be asked to determine what metalling will be done in accordance with his previous promise in this connection.
