THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE HIGHER LEVELS FOR BANKS Forward movemonts. in banks and insurance issues and a weaker demand for State loans wero features of the operations 011 tho Auckland Stock Exchange yestorday. The other sections, including mining, were quiet. There was a> shading in offers for several issues of Government securities and for tho first timq. in a long period the aggregate representation of holders almost equalled that of buyers. With tho exception of 1939 4£ per cent stock, for which buyors again offered £95 15s, all 1939 and 1938 issues were sought 5s lower at £95 10s. At £IOO 15s, tho buying price for tho 1937 5£ per cent bond issues was 2s 6d lower, there being 110 change in quotations. For 1937 5£ ,pcr cent stock, Soptember issuo, buyers offered £IOO 10s, a reduction of ss, holders again quoting £lOl ss. In banks, there was a fair turnover on a higher basis. Commercials changed hands at tho final call at 13s lid and 13s 10d,- compared with the last previous sale at 13s lOd. They were available Id lower at 13s lid, offers revealing an increase of Id to 13s lOd. For Now South Wales, holders were quoted 2s 6d higher at £27, offers being reduced by 5s to £26. New Zealands changed hands 3d higher at 47s 3d, moro being sought 6d higher at this price, with quotations at 47s 9d, an advance of 3d. A sale in Union Banks 9d higher at £6 17s 9d was accompanied by an increase in offers of Is to £6 16s 6d, with quotations Is 6c! higher at £J. Iloldors of National Insurance quoted Id higher at 12s Bd, and a parcel changed hands Id higher at 12s 7d. An early sale in New Zealands unchanged at 40s 6d was followed by a slight shading in quotations, offers being stationary at 40s 6d. Operations in tho other sections included a wider demand for coal shares with only slight variation in levels. Quoted ox div., Auckland Gas were sought 6d lower at 20s, and the contributing issue 3d lower at 14s 3d. The only change in tho breweries section was an advance of 3d to 25s 9d in offers for Tooth's. There were two 6ales in Colonial Sugars 2s 6d higher at £42, and quotations were 5s higher at £42 ss. For Gear Moat a sale at 32s 6d was la above tho previous figure. No business was done in mining and only limited movements in levels took place. Wainis and Grand Junctions were available Id lower at 15s lid and 2s lid respectively.
