EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD PROPOSED CHAIR OF MUSIC The following ar® extracts from the New Zealand Herald of August 1, 1882: " I hear that an offer has been made by Judge Fenton (on behalf of the Auckland Choral Society) to the Government to raise £ICXX) toward the foundation of a chair of mu6ic in the Auckland University College if the Government would give another telegraphs the Herald s Parliamentary correspondent. " The Government has replied that the sum would not be sufficient, and that the subject will not be dealt with this session. This liberal offer of the Choral Society shows the flourishing condition of the society and the willingness of the people of Auckland to promote the teaching of music in its different branches." Sir George Grey gave notice of motion in the Representatives last night as follows:—" Tljat this House will, on Thursday next (August 3), resolve itself into committee of the whole to considei an address to the Administrator of thr Government, Sir James Prendergast, re., questing His Excellency to cause a suf ficient sum to be placed on the Estiniai<> for the establishment of an agricultur college in the Provincial District of Auckland." Sir George Grev sul>sequently gavt notice that he would ask leave to in'm duce a bill to provide for the establish ment of an agricultural college in th» Provincial District of Auckland. It has transpired that the. Prince of Wales desired to proceed to Egypt with the British expeditionary force, but. the Queen objected, and in deference to Her Majesty's wishes His Royal Highness abandoned the ides.
