EXPENDITURE CONTRASTED NAVAL MAN'S COMPARISONS In an incisive and vigorous speech at |fc meeting of the Victorian branch of tho Bfeturned Soldiers' League recently, IlearAdmiral Hyde quoted statistics showing the extraordinary difference between the expenditure in both England and Australia on amusements and luxuries compared with that 011 defence. / In England. the speaker said, £120,000.000 was spent on defence, more than three times that amount on the civil service, anr. a total of £500.000,000 on "booze and gambling!" In Australia in 1929-30 an amount of £4.500,000 was spent on defence, £9,000,000 on spirits, ' £13,000.000 on beer, and £12,000,000 on 1,1 smokes." Amusement, expenditure was bo great that the statistician had insufficient time to count it. Over £34,000,000, however, "had been spew!, on 'booze' and tobacco, and £4,500,000 on defence, which 6howed the hard-up state of the country." In New South Wales 'in ten months the State lottery had collected £2,000,000, and in a year the Commonwealth expenditure on the navy was £1,400,000, bo that the lottery realised one and a-half times themaval expenditure. In Victoria the annual betting turnover alone was / / • £40,000,000, said the admiral.
