WOMAN CLERK'S THEFTS
"STOLE TO KEEP ANOTHER" CASE ADJOURNED FOR YEAR A young woman clerk, aged 24, whose name was ordered to bo suppressed, pleaded guilty to two charges of stealing money from the firm which employed her, when she appeared before Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., in the Police Court on Saturday. The amounts involved were £35 3s 3d and £3l lis 4d. Detective-Sergeant T. Kelly said the firm concerned had wished to withdraw the charges, but that was not possible now that the police were informed. Accused had readily admitted the thefts, and had covered up the deficiency by hiding "1.0.U.'5" from the accountant. The money had been spent. For eight years, Mr. Kelly added, the young woman had been a trusted employee, and she appeared to have been a very satisfactory worker. "This is not an ordinary case of embezzlement," commented the female probation officer, Major A. Gordon. "The girl stole to help another person, and she did not spend the money on herself." The magistrate remarked that the breach of trust after a long period of good service was an extraordinary occurrence. In view of the good record given accused ho was prepared to adjourn the case for 12 months to give the young woman another opportunity. Restitution could ho made in that time.
