ESCAPE FROM FLAMES

THREE OCCUPANTS OF HOUSE EXIT THROUGH FRONT WINDOW A hurried escape from a fire was made by Mrs. R. Riley, her son and a niece, Miss P. Martin, at their homo at 2 Enfield Street, Mount Eden, at an early hour yesterday morning. When the family retired to bed at about 11 o'clock on Thursday night a small fire was burning in a range in the kitchen. At about 2.30 a.m. Mr. Riley was awakened by smoke in hi 3 bedroom, and he found the kitchen in flames. He immediately roused his mother and cousin, who made a hurried exit through a window in the front of the house. Although no one was injured, Mrs. Riley suffered from shock and the effects of the smoke, and collapsed just after leaving the House. Mr. Riley hurried to an automatic fire alarm box a short distance along Enfield Street, but the Mount Eden brigade had already been summoned by a passing motorist, who noticed smoke issuing from the house. Although the kitchen and an adjoining kitchenette were practically gutted and the contents destroyed before the arrival of the brigade, the firemen were instrumental in checking the spread of the flames and saving the main part of the house, which is a wooden building of five rooms. At the time of the fire Mrs. Riley's husband, who is the owner of the house, was at Manurewa.
