EVENING GOLF
LONDON COURSES CROWDED STIMULATION OF 'EMPLOYMENT; Tlio demand for evening golf as long as tho light lasts has overwhelmed the' near-. to-London golf clubs with tho coming ofsummer weather. Thousands of golfers havo been playing up to nearly ten I o'clock every night. They dash' straight.; from work to their club to make, tho; most of their opportunity from six o'clockonward.
This rush of night golfing has dislocated the services of many London clubs. Clubs around London can bo divided into three classes: —Thoso which consider it golfingly immoral to play after eight o'clock; thoso which do not mind hpw lato their members play so long as they do not want a supper meal; tlioso which aro making tho best of tho summer harvest by keeping their dining rooms open until eleven o'clock and providing adequate service for their members. Ono famous clnb so much dislikes tho idea of evening golf that no members may start to play after half-past six. Another sends out officials to drive members off' tho course at eight o'clock. When eight; strikes you must pack lip and go. These, two clubs aro among, tho most , expensive and course-proud in London. , : A club at Richmond has solved the evening play difficulty by serving nine' o'clock dinners three nights a week during Juno and July. "Generally it is the luxury clubs, which cater for other activities as well as golf, which are trying to, discourage evening, play," said tho secretary of a prominent London club. "Golf to them is-just a side lino. The real golf clubs aro catering for tho evening rush as best they can by keeping open their dining rooms and club premises as long as- there is a demand. All this evening golf means work for caddies, extra club servants and waiters to bo engaged, and stimulates employment."
