Vaals is a son of Vulais, who was a wonderful success at tho stud in Australia, out of Galteo Queen, and ho a sire lino that is now much in demand with breeders in the Commonwealth. Vaala was a good racehorse and he was a particularly sound horso who came through hi 3 racing career without the slightest sign of weakness. Through his sire, Valais, Vaals receives two strains of Bend Or in addition to a doubling of Hampton. Through Galtee Queen there is a. doubling of Musket, with a strain of St. Simon also, and breeding is certainly in favour of Vaals proving equally successful as a sire as he was on the turf.

Another sire who will bo located at the Mardella Stud in tho new season is Tea Tiny, by The Tetraroh from Good and Gay. For several seasons past Tea Tray has been located in the South Island, and ho is a proved sire of winners, his progeny having won in the vicinity of £40,000 in New Zealand. Most of his progeny have shown early speed, which is not surprising in view of the fact that he is a son of The Tetrarch, who was unbeaten, and has not only sired many brilliant horses, but also three St. Leger winners. Tea Tray is sure to receive further opportunities in his new home at Qtahuhu and should continue to sire winners. WHIRLWIND (I.) The English-bred stallion Whirlwind, by Galloper Light from Double Back, will be located in the coming season at Ardmore, near Papakuia. Foaled in 1924, Whirlwind was imported to New Zealand jn 1929 by the Auckland Stud Company, and he is p.ttractively-bred besides being a fine individual. The oldest of his stock are two-year-olds and have not yot had a fair chance to prove their worth, although several of them display undoubted promise. Galloper Light, siro of Whirlwind, has sired winners of over £04,000 in England, and one of his best gets was Beam, winner of the Oaks. There is somo ffood staying blood on both sides of Whirlwind s pedigree and thero is every possibility that he will endow *his progeny with speed and stamina. KEY DE ORO As a result of his success in tho South Island. Bey do Oro is one of the best-known trotting sires in tho Dominion, and local breeders are unlikely to havo any hesitation in availing themselves of his services in tho coming season, when he will be at tho Mardella Stud, Otahuhu. Rey de Oro is still a comparatively young horso and he lias sired winners over all distances, liis progeny possess both speed and stamina, and, as ho has sired such good r ) ®fJ or 2, 1 ®, r ? as Roi L'Or (4.20). St. G-iorge (4.24), Gold Country (4.20). Mountain Ore (4.20) Neeoro (4.24), Invader (4.27), Roddy (2.8), and Chef (2.9), he has undoubtedly proved a stud success. Key de Oro is » son of Copa de Oro (1.59), while hi 3 dam Subilo threw four horses with records of under 2.9. SURPRISE JOURNEY Ono of tho best-performed straightout trotters who has raced in Now Zealand in tho past few seasons is Surpriso Journey, who is well-known to' Auckland sportsmen bv virtue of his. fine performances at Alexandra Park, where ho has won good races among horses of his own gait and also been successful among the pacers, burpriso Journey is brimful of quality and is possesBed of both speed and stamina. Arrangements have been: made for him to stand in the coming season at S. August s property at Mangere, and a horse of his breeding and performances should not lack patronage, especially from owners anxious to breed straightout trotters. POINTER Tho brilliant pacing stallion Jewel Pointor, who has been a particularly good performer over all distances, will do stud duty in tho coming soason at Mangere. A son of Logan Pointer, the most successful trotting sire ever imported to Isew Zealand, and .the Abb/jy Bells (imp.) maro Lnw Chimes, Jewel Pointor is an attractivelybred horso and there is no reason why he should not transmit somo of his good Qualities. During' his racing career Jewel Pointor displayed an abundance of speed and stamina, besides being one of tho _ bestmannered and most reliable horses m the light harness sport in recent years. . SALE OF MEGAPHONE The three-year-old gelding Megaphone, by Colossus from Hnmaresque, has been sold by Mr. K. S. Williams, M.P., to a Western Australian buyer. Megaphone'won a race at Napier Park last month and was to have been taken to Australia by J. H. Jefferd, He raced disappointmsly at Trentnarn, where the going wn-d probably Dot to nis liking.
