EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The /following nro extracts from the New Zealand Herald of July 31» 1882:- . , Tho gross receipts from railways in the first quarter of the current financial year (the qiiarter ending the 30th ultimo) were approximately £260,000, or at the rate of £1,040,000 per annum. The net profits were about £115,000, being at the annual rate of £460,000. This very closely approaches five per cent on the cost. The first pile of the large railway bridge, or rather viaduct, over the Tamahere Golly, the principal work on Mercer and Marshall's contract, Cambridge and Hamilton railway works, was driven on Thursday (July 27) in the presence of Mr. James Hannah, the Government inspector of works, who will reside on tho spot while the driving of the piles continues. Admiral Sir Beauchamp Seymour has written a letter to the Khedive in which, on behalf of the British Government, he disclaims any intention on the part of Kngland to effect the conquest of KgyptHis Roynl Highness the Duke of Teck has l>een appointed a member of the staff of General' Sir Garnet Wolseley, commander «f the British troops in Egypt.
