Penrose Fry, who has written a book called The Church Surprising, is the husband of Shelia Kaye-Smith, the novelist. Thackeray's "Vanity l 1 air" has been filmed—and " modernised." Becky Sharp is a handsome " gold-digger," and Rawdon Crawley has become a " crook. Selborne Hill, tho Hampshire beauty spoSfc, famous for it.s association with Gilbert White, the naturalist, has been taken over by tho National Trust from Magdalen College, Oxford. The British Publishers' Association reports that the costs of binding have already risen in consequence of the tariff, owing to an increase in the price of cloth and of leaf gold for lettering. Tho twenty-first anniversary of Sir William Gilbert's death was recently observed. Putman will shortly publish further ballads from his famous pen that have never appeared in book form. Commander Koble Chatlerton, author of " Tho Koenigsberg Adventure," has written nearly fifty books. By birth he is a Yorkshireman; for many years he was a Fleet Street journalist, and during the war he did intelligence work against the submarine menace. A learned company met in tho British Museum recently to hear tho only existing record of Alfred Tennyson's voice. All they heard from tho old phonograph and the primitive record bearing the precious voice was a whimpering, scratchy " ojee bojee." Tho " ojeo bojeo indicated a recording failure and the loss of Tennyson's voico to posterity.
