BANNED FROM CHURCH
" SMUGGLERS M INDIGNANT Considerable criticism was lately expressed at Hast : ngs, England, among the players rehearsing for the Battle Abbey pageant of a decision to ban those playing the parts of " disreputable charac-. ters " in tho Battle fair scene from attending in costumo at a ceremonia. church service and procossion which was to conclude the pageant. The Dean of Battle, tho Very Rev. W. W. Youard, said: " Obviously characters such as smugglers, or the ' fat lady from tho fair' would be incongruous figures at the church procession. The banners will bo carried by those who carried them in tho pagoant and possibly by those represent" ng bishops, archbishops aud other ecclesiastical personages." " Anyone would think' wo were real smugglers," said one of those playing the part of a smuggler, " and, even if wo were, surely Christ welcomed publicans and sinners. The idea is as medieval asf tho pageant."
