DAMAGE TO COUNTY ROADS PROSECUTION OF SAWMILLER FINES TOTALLING £36 IMPOSED [by telegraph—own courespondent] HTJNTLY. Friday In the Magistrate's Court at Huntly to-day, before Mr. F. H. Levieu, S.M., five charges were preferred against John Phillip Kelly, sawmiller, of Waitoa, by tho Waikato County Council, of committing breaches of tho Motor Regulations, in that he operated a multi-axle motor vehicle on the Ohinewai-Tahuna road with a greater load than tho road was classified to carry. Defendant pleaded guilty. The county traffic inspector, Mr. W. E. Nicholson, said the charges were made as the result of considerable expense incurred by the County Council in repairing damage done to roads and bridges throughout the district, caused by the overloading of motor-trucks. He cited an instance in which the damage done to one bridge was estimated at £lO. Defendant was convicted on each charge, and the fines, ranging from £ls to 30s, totalled £36 10s, in addition to costs. A carrier, George McDonald, of Putaruru, was charged with a similar offence and was convicted and fined £5 and costs.
