ROYAL NAVAL VOLUNTEER DEFENDANT GIVEN OPPORTUNITY [bv telegraph—press association] CHRISTCHURCH. Friday The first case of a man failing to attend drill parades called by the Canterbury Division of tho Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve was heard to-day, when Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., after hearing evidence, adjourned the further hearing for three months to enable tho defendant, William Leonard Gobbe, to prove that ho was willing to abide by his contract. The prosecuting petty officer said that when men mado a contract to join the division they wero issued with kit and equipment valued at £lO. It was a serious matter to default from parades, as money spent on kit was practically wasted. The magistrate pointed out. that defendant was liable to three months' imprisonment or a fine of £2O.
