WHEAT SHIPS' VOYAGES
ONE STRIKES HURRICANE SERIES OF MISFORTUNES LONDON. July 19 The sailing ship C. B. Pederson, badly 'damaged in a storm, to-day arrived at Ipswich, 123 days out from Port Victoria. Captain Dahlstrom said that one of the worst hurricanes in his experience struck the vessel on April 5 with a mad sea. The main upper topsail yard crashed to the deck, taking the yards with' it. Twelve sails were ripped to threads. The crowning misfortune was the death of the 60-year-old sailmaker at the height of the gale. Owing to this and to the loss of sails and serious deck damage, the captain abandoned the attempt to round the Horn and sailed for Panama. The Mozart has not been reported since sailing. She would have encountered the same storm
OTHER VESSELS DELAYED UNDERWRITERS NOT ANXIOUS LONDON, July 14 Although- many of the wheat ships have not yet arrived, Lloyds underwriters are not anxious, as delay in rounding the Horn is believed to be responsible. The Mozart, which is the longest out, left Port Victoria for Falmouth on March 3, and since then has been neither sighted nor reported. The Archibald Russell was last reported on June 12 north of the Equator. The Grace Harwar Was spoken a fortnight after leaving Port Victoria on May 2, but nothing has been seen of her since. The Olive Bank left Port Germein on April . 13. The Favell was spoken near the Equator on June 24.
