FIRST CASE IN DOMINION *
employers adopt new terms
The first instance of the cancellation of a Dominion award, nnder recen amendments to the Act, owing to the failure of parties to agree by conciliation, is provided ,n the case of the general engineering^.,trades. The award expired last ,;Sunday new terms and conditions offered by . the employers .having been rejected at conciliation councils by representatives .of the workers. As the award has ceased to be operative, the employers have drawn up terms and conditions of employment to apply to moulders, boilermakers and iron ship and bridge builders from July 18 until further notice. The new terms and conditions adopted by the employers have been printed in much the same form as an. arbitration award and copies have, beep posted in the various workshops, foundries and factories concerned. Under the new legislation, the terms and laid down by the employers will operate in practically tho same manner as an award of the Arbitration Court. . According to Mr. S. E. Wright, secretary of the Auckland Employers' Association, the new terms and conditions will result in a further 10 per cent, reduction in wages and alterations in overtime rates and general conditions of work. The scale of wages hast been redrafted to permit of wider classification of workers and to distinguish more between the skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled workers. • , •" ! -
