DEBTS TO AMERICA.
OPINIONS OF POLITICIANS, CANCELLATION OPPOSED. / NEW YORK July 12. Few thinking Americans can fiee bow Europo can ever pay her war debts to the United States, and there is a general belief' that complete cancellation or radical reduction must come. But when the Lausanne Conference shows any hint of action along such lines, American politicians stage an uprising which suggests how far distant any settlement may be. A newspaper poll taken yesterday showed only one United States Senator favouring cancellation, and out of 28 Congressmen whose opinions were sought 259 were violently opposed to any scaling down and the remaining 28 were noncommittal. t Senators tuned , their replies with eyes on the coming election, Senator Capper declared that it was a plot to shift Europe's burdens on to American shoulders.: Senator Watson, Republican Leader in the Senate, said will never revise or reduce those debts.
