NORTHERN TERRITORY.

MINISTER'S INVESTIGATIONS. LARGE IDLE HOLDINGS. SYDNEY, July 18. The Minister for the Interior, Mr. A. Parkhill, has returned from a visit to the Northern Territory. It is understood the result of his observations will be embodied in a report to the Federal Government and will probably include strong, criticism of some Territory settlers who are holding huge areas of land which are allowed to remain undeveloped. Other settlers who are working smaller holdings should be assisted to some extent. Concessions in land tenure.' and other conditions would encourage tho investment of capital and render the territory valuable to the Commonwealth.

Racial problems, especially those concerning half-caste natives, will need definite treatment. Mr. Parkhiir finds considerable local criticism of the work of missions, which, it is complained, do not train natives to be of any real use for station work.
