EXPORTS OF JERSEYS.
SALES TO ( AUSTRALIANS.
A valuable quartette of Jersey cattle was recently shipped to Victoria on account of Mr. R. H. Batten, Panmure. Mr. Batten, after making a tour of the principal New Zealand studs,' purchased one bull and three in-calf heifers of superior individuality and breeding. The bull, Jersey Meadows Perfect, was bred by Mr. H. H. Phillips, Te Rehunga. O.K. Combination Flower, selected from Mr. A. E. Watkin's (Takanini) stud is a beautiful heifer by Oxford Beau's Combination, the imported son of the worldfamous Combination's Premier. Mr. Batten's selection from Mr. F. Phillips' (Otorohanga) herd was Hua Brook Elfa. This heifer was bred by Mr. H. Salway, Bell Block, and is by Victor's Handsome Prince, imported. The heifer's dam, Hua Brook Eula, is a double grand-daughter of Majesty's Squire, a bull by Mr. Cornwall's noted sire, Hollj Bank Squire, C.8.8., and Majesty's Eileen, a bronze medal winner with a certificate of record of 606.931b. fat and a reserve champion of New Zealand for Mr. Salway. She is in-calf to Murier's Oxford Noble, sire of good winners in New Zealand and several champions in America, where he was used prior to export from the United States of America.
From Mr. W. H. Miera (Hamilton) a beautiful heifer was secured in Almadale Oxford Niobe. She is by the island sire Willonyx Oxford Lad. Among the many premier awards won by Willonyx Oxford Lad were the North Island championships of 1930 and 1931. This bull has also sired numerous prize-winners. Jersey Brae Lass, the dam of this heifer, was bred by Mr. T. Church, Te Rapa, and is by the Soumise Majesty bull, Soumise Prince, and is out of Jersey Lass. This heifer is in-calf to a line-bred Majesty bull in Almadale Cavalier. Mr. Batten's cattle have reached their destination safely and have been greatly admired by all who have seen them. The sale, to Victoria, of the young, imported Jersey sire Oxford Beau's Pretty Oxford, will be of interest to breeders. Mr. John Robb, Westmere, purchased this eire at the 1928 " Cooper " importation sale held in Wellington, for 525gn5., when his eire, Oxford Beau's Combination, was secured by the Takanini breeder, Mr. A. E. Watkin, for the breed record price of 2000gns. Oxford Beau's Pretty Oxford has distinguished himself as a show bull. He has sired a number of high-class winners and has left remarkably even type and pronounced dairy character in his progeny. This bull was sold at a ,substantial pi-ice on account of Mr. Robb to Mr. C. Gordon Lyon, owner of the " Banyule " Stud, which is one of the best herds in the whole of Australia. Mr. Robb is retaining a choice son of this bull "to line-breed to the strain.
Oxford Beau's Pretty Oxford is by Mr. A. E. Watkin's great sire Oxford Beau's Combination, whose progeny are putting up wonderful records under test. It is fortunate for the breed in New Zealand that this 'bull had considerable service in the Dominion prior to exportation.
